Coaching Staff
Assistant Coach Jon Newman-Gonchar
Jon Newman-Gonchar begins his first season as an assistant at UCSD. He will assist in all aspects of individual and team training. Specifically on-court coaching, practice planning, video set up and analysis, and management of the competitive cauldron. Newman-Gonchar will serve as recruiting coordinator, is responsible for managing correspondence, evaluations, and visits with prospective student-athletes. He will operate the DataVolley video-statistical program, serve as the Camp Coordinator and is responsible for all administrative duties involving the overnight UCSD Women’s Volleyball Summer Camp.
Newman-Gonchar spent the 2006-07 year as an assistant at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. He helped plan practicies and trained the Cajuns’ setters. He also served as the recruiting coordinator, maintaining and keeping up with over 100 prospective student athletes from British Columbia to California.
Newman-Gonchar spent the previous three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Northern Arizona the past two seasons under former UL coach Chris Campbell. More recently he was working with Thompson Rivers University men’s volleyball team in Kamloops, B.C., Canada. While at Northern Arizona his responsibilities included preparing and running the practices for the non-travel party members. In addition Newman-Gonchar was the voice of the "Almost Live with John and Jon" radio show which was a live webcast audio/video show of the team during match play. Newman-Gonchar was involved in the volleyball scene of Flagstaff, Ariz., while working at NAU. He worked with setters on the High Altitude Volleyball Club as an assistant coach and eventually head coach and also spent time with Flagstaff High School’s girl’s volleyball team.
At Thompson Rivers University his main responsibility included preparing scouting reports. Newman-Gonchar also was involved in preparing the teams Southern California Tour for the Winter of 2006.
Newman-Gonchar has worked several volleyball camps including the UCSD and UCSB Summer Camps. He attended the UCLA Summer Camp as a player from 1998-2000. In the summers he also returned to Claremont to work with the CHS boy’s volleyball team.
A native of Claremont, Calif., he played prep volleyball at Claremont High School before attending Northern Arizona. While at NAU he was a member of the men’s club volleyball program. Newman-Gonchar received his bachelor’s degree in health sciences from Northern Arizona in December 2005. _______________________________________________________________________________
Assistant Coach Kaui Salzman
Kaui Salzman begins her first season as an assistant coach for the UC San Diego women’s volleyball team in 2007. Salzman will assist with all training and scouting aspects of the program. She has a emphasis on serve/serve-receive, backrow defense and liberos.
She comes to UCSD from Saint Mary’s College where she was a four-year letter winner with the Gaels. She averaged over three kills per game in her last three seasons and was a three-time All-West Coast Conference selection.
Additionally, SMC went to the NCAA postseason in each of Salzman’s last three seasons. She graduated from Saint Mary’s in 2005, also earning the George R. McKeon award which is given to the outstanding Senior Student-Athlete of the Year.
Salzman is a San Diego native, having prepped at Rancho Bernardo High School where she was her team’s Most Valuable Player following her senior year. _______________________________________________________________________________
Volunteer Assistant Coach Jaclyn Jones
Jaclyn Jones begins her first season as a volunteer assistant coach for UC San Diego’s women’s volleyball team in 2007. She will assist in all training and scouting aspects of the program. She will have a special emphasis with the middle blockers.
From 2002-2006, Jones spent her collegiate volleyball career at the University of Oregon as a scholarship athlete where she competed with the Ducks in the Pac-10 conference. She has recently relocated to San Diego and looks forward to transitioning towards the coaching side of volleyball.
Originally from Fort St. John British Columbia Canada, Jones represented BC in several tournaments in Canada and Europe, including the Canadian Summer Games in 2001. She also was the captain of the Canadian Youth National team, which competed in the NORCECA championships in the Dominican Republic in 2000.
Jones received her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Oregon in 2006. She prepped at North Peace Secondary School in her hometowns, Fort St. John BC Canada.
